Empire Of The Sun

Against the backdrop of orange sun is the smoke trail of a falling aircraft. In the foreground is the silhouette of a boy jumping for joy.

First off, we have the story which has a young English boy who struggles to survive under Japanese occupation during World War II. I thought the story was very compelling and interesting seeing another aspect of the World War 2 conflict that affected other countries.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were great all around with young Christian Bale giving an excellent performance in one of his earliest roles. The supporting cast filled out the film and all worked well off each other.

As for the film's visuals I thought there were some impressive shots throughout with the choices made for the cinematography especially some of the shots that showed the harshness of the times for everyone during the time period. Moving onto the tone of the film which did a good job at setting the atmosphere of the war and being in the camps so you felt for the people. I thought the soundtrack of the film suited the film very well especially with the emotional scenes.

I give Empire Of The Sun a score of 8/10
