First off, we have the story which has two greedy peasants lured by gold escort a man and woman across enemy lines. However, they do not realize that their companions are actually a princess and her general. I thought the story was thrilling and enjoyable as the peasants faced many challenges over the journey.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were good in terms of acting across the board and chemistry between the two main leads as well as with the general and princess held the story together.

As for the film's visuals, I thought the cinematography was great and I liked the location footage across the journey especially the fortress and forest locations and the camerawork  with it's framing and depth captures Kurosawa's style well. Now we have the action which when it appeared was choreographed very well and the peril was definitely felt. Moving onto the tone of the film which had some cutting tension and interesting drama to make the film compelling. I thought the soundtrack added to the film nicely with some good uses of music from the time period.

I give The Hidden Fortress a score of 8/10
