The Great Gatsby

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Gatsby_(2013_film)#/media/File:TheGreatGatsby2013Poster.jpg

For the thirty-seventh film of the month we have The Great Gatsby

First off, we have the story which has a writer and wall street trader, Nick, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbour, Jay Gatsby. I thought the story was intriguing throughout and how it progressed it became more entertaining.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were well acted by all the min cast withe the standouts being Leonardo Di Caprio as the main man Gatsby as he manages to portray the wealthy and mysterious man who is the main focus. Then you had Tobey Maguire as Nick who becomes involved with Gatsby and other individuals he meets and watches everything unfold.

As for the film's visuals I thought the way the setting was presented with it's buildings, costumes and other aesthetics that you would see but the cinematography of the film was  over the top to match the film but was too over the top in parts and became distracting.   Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought worked as because of the way it was presented and built up the more dramatic tone suited it than a calmer one. I thought the soundtrack of the film which fit the film as it decided to take the over the top route with the atmosphere and used tracks from present time than having what the film would have had if it was a classic setting and not modernised like the film presented itself.

Overall, I thought this film was mixed film with both good and bad elements to it but because of it's story and characters that built the world up and their relationships were very interesting to see change.

I give The Great Gatsby a score of 7/10

Overall, I thought this film was a very enjoyable film and seeing Stallone pull off the kind of character he played in this film was very interesting because of what he had to go through and what he had been through in his past and how it effected him.

Overall, I thought this film was a very interesting film and I liked the way Hitchcock handled a spy film by still including his signature mystery and suspense while including some thrilling action to make it a great film.

I give North By Northwest a score of 8/10

For the thirty-third film of the month we have Vertigo

First off, we have the story which has A retired San Francisco detective suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange activities of an old friend’s wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her. I thought the story was very entertaining and as the story unfolded it got better and better with the mystery it presented.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were one of the best parts about the film and the chemistry between the main duo was fantastic with James Stewart giving a great performance as the acrophobia detective and how he changes over the course of the film.

As for the film's visuals I thought were very good and I liked the way the camera did the shots to represent Scottie's vertigo. however the rest of the visuals were just as good with it's camera and lighting. Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought was done very well ad it built the mystery up over the course of the story and you could feel that something was wrong. I thought the soundtrack of the film was wonderful adding to the intrigue of the story as well as increasing tension.

For the thirty-second film of the month we have Braveheart

First off, we have the story which has William Wallace, a late 13th-century Scottish warrior who leads the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. I thought the story was entertaining enough with some interesting moments throughout and i had a good time.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought in terms of the acting was pretty good and you could see why the main characters wanted freedom and would fight for it and you could feel the conflict from both sides.

As for the film's visuals I thought managed to capture living during the time period the film with the landscape footage as well as the conflicts that were going on at the time. The visuals were at there best during the action to capture the fighting as well as the brutal killings. Now we have the action which was very thrilling and the large battle scenes were executed very well with the stunts as well as the camerawork and editing. Moving onto the tone of the film which did well at making it feel like an epic war film with the conflict between the countries and the leaders in power. I thought the soundtrack of the film was very good with some of the music of Scotland while the rest of the soundtrack worked well in the scenes needed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot#/media/File:Das_boot_ver1.jpg

For the thirty-first film of the month we have Das Boot

First off, we have the story which has a German submarine hunts allied ships during the Second World War, but it soon becomes the hunted. The crew tries to survive below the surface, while stretching both the boat and themselves to their limits. I thought the story was very entertaining to watch and even though it was over three hours that didn't matter as the pacing was consistent and every event mattered.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were very interesting as the film focused on a crew of German officers so you saw them fighting the British however you still cared for their situation and you could see they all worked together well and the chemistry was very good.

As for the film's visuals I thought when it was focused in the submarine it built the claustrophobic atmosphere with the sets that add to the realism of the film and what it would have been like to be aboard one especially when the camera moved with the action inside the submarine. Then there were some stunning imagery such as the outside shots of the submarine as well as a particular shot with a destroyed boat.

Now we have the action which I thought was very thrilling and entertaining to watch as you are seeing the perspective of the crew you see them react to all the situations however grave and they push themselves to the limits. Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought was built up excellently as the crew faced difficult opposition and you waited to see what the outcome would be and how the crew would face it. I thought the soundtrack of the film when used was very good as well as the added sounds of the submarine but when there was no soundtrack during the tense scenes is when the film was at it's best.

Overall, I thought this film was both an entertaining and claustrophobic war film that pushed the crew and the boat too their limits and the tension couldn't be higher which made the film more thrilling to watch.

I give Das Boot a score of 9/10

First off, we have the story which has a former Prohibition-era Jewish gangster who returns to the Lower East Side of Manhattan over thirty years later, where he once again must confront the ghosts and regrets of his old life. I thought the story was very entertaining and how it was presented was interesting as it unfolded from year to year to out of order as it pieced together at the end.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were very well acted and you could tell there was chemistry between all the main characters especially when they were kids starting out and how the years and events they became involved in evolved all the relationships good and bad.

As for the film's visuals I thought the film looked great with scenes that were filmed with precise and timed perfection so that it would be more entertaining. Some of the cinematography in the film stood out to me because of the way they were set up and positioned. Now we have the action which was thrilling as well as entertaining to watch with the various gang violence over the course of the film as to be expected of this type of film. Moving onto the tone of the film which managed to mix both the action and violence of the gangster times as well building up the dangerous and serious aspects of working with them and getting involved with them. I thought the soundtrack of the film was excellently done with tracks that suited the film's style and setting.

Overall, I thought this film was excellently done and how Sergio Leone decided to handle a gangster film was intriguing from the start with a well crafted story and characters that held it up and you cared about even if they were gangsters.

In terms of the film's visuals I thought they were expertly done especially in terms of the action which was done carefully to capture everything so you could see what was going on and the stunt work done with the action was very good. the cinematography in general was very good with particular camera positions as well as lighting to build an unsettling atmosphere throughout. Then there was also the editing which was clean and paced very well. Now we have the action which was very intense and thrilling and it didn't hold back with the violence and showing it which at parts was hard to watch. Moving onto the tone of the film which didn't hold anything back and was hard hitting from minute one with it's themes and it's dark story.  I thought the soundtrack of the film was very melancholic and slow which fit the film well.

Overall, I thought this film was very entertaining and one of the best revenge films I have seen through it's contents and it's action which it made more personal to the character so it would be more engaging.

I give Oldboy a score of 9/10

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were very well acted giving their own spin on these characters where you somehow end up caring for some of them even if the decisions they make are very questionable.

As for the film's visuals I thought they were stunning with some very choice decisions in terms of the lighting such as using soft lighting  to add to the mood. There is also the use of camera positions and movements which add to the overall themes that the film wanted to bring across such as the uses of the colour red to represent love, desire or even lust in some cases. Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought was good and from the moment it started and what it wanted to bring across it was consistent and well paced. I thought the soundtrack of the film which was one of the best parts about the film using slower and paced tracks which again compliment the mood in some scenes but fit the whole film anyway.

Overall, I thought this film was very enjoyable film, although awkward in some places the themes it was trying to get across kept my intrigue and ended up surprising me which made it more entertaining.

I give American Beauty a score of 10/10

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were very good as they were the main focus of the film by being in a murder trial so the acting had to be at a good standard to provide the necessary emotional responses which they did from the witness, defence and prosecution.

As for the film's visuals I thought it had some consistent cinematography over the course of the film although nothing standing out which took me away which was fine for it being a courtroom drama. Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought did a good job at building up the mystery and suspense of the trial as new evidence was brought to light and witnesses were called for. I thought the soundtrack which when used throughout the film was pretty good and added to the tension being built up over the court case.

The other supporting roles were also well acted and added to the overall world and story for both sides of the fight.

As for the film's visuals I thought again this was one of Studio Ghibli's best works such as how they created the many supernatural elements of the film but also the landscapes add to the land so it feels like old Japan. Now we have the action which I thought was both entertaining and thrilling as the conflict between the humans and forest creatures ran rampant. Moving onto the tone of the film which managed to capture the essence of fantasy as well as the scale of an adventure film that makes it entertaining to watch. I thought the soundtrack of the film was very good as it mixed tracks of mystery and suspense with action.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were the interesting part of the film as the main focuses where robots and even though they could show their actions and emotions with few sounds and pieces of dialogue, it worked for this film.

As for the film's visuals I thought the animation for the film was very good and their depiction of the desolate Earth felt like it may look like that years and years from now if the world continues to use bad energy sources. Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought was well balanced between some fun comedy as well as the drama for the story so it could be entertaining. I thought the soundtrack of the film was good and using older tracks since the film was set in the far future gave the film a nice touch.

Overall, I thought this film was a very enjoyable film that surprised me with how much I ended up liking it and as another Pixar film I've seen in a long time and it reminded me of how good they were.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were done very well so that you cared about them as they faced the threat of the shark and the acting backed that up with each of the main characters giving a convincing performance.

As for the film's visuals I thought the film has some fantastic visuals such as when the camera would go under the water for the sharks perspective as well as when an attack would happen and didn't shy away from showing the brutal details of it. The cinematography was excellent in terms of camera placement and lighting. Now we have the action which I thought was thrilling as well as entertaining as the shark started appearing and continued to threaten Amity Island. Eventually when the characters got down to business oh hunting it, that's when it got more exciting. Moving onto the tone of the film which managed to build up the horror with all the attacks as well as when the next attack would happen. I thought the soundtrack of the film which is one of the well known things about the film with how famous it is was and I can see why as it built the tension throughout the film as the shark threatened the public. The main theme was one of the best tracks and it added to the fear and building up of the shark.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought the acting was top notch and everyone gave a convincing performance to add to the overall experience with the main standout being the focus of the film: Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon.

As for the film's visuals I thought  the film had a masterful look do it in terms of composition as well as lighting especially during the night time scenes. There were even times when some shots were drawn out and held on them to add to the horrors that the slaves felt.  Moving onto the tone of the film which I managed to capture the harsh and unforgiving times that the films takes place in and wasn't afraid to show off the treatment to the slaves throughout the film. I thought the soundtrack of the film was very good with them adding to discomforting feel and situation of the film's story.

Overall, I thought this film was hard one to sit through as it was a true story being told of how he got put in slavery until his eventual freedom but not before going through an awful period of his life and because of how truthful it was this will be the one and only time I view this film.

I give 12 Years A Slave a score of 9/10

For the sixteenth film of the month we have Gone With The Wind

First off, we have the story which has a manipulative woman and a roguish man and their turbulent romance during the American Civil War and Reconstruction periods. I thought the story was ok but I felt could have been cut down.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were well acted and played the characters very well with the standouts being Rhett played by Clark Gable, one of the interests of Scarlett and Scarlett herself played by Vivien Leigh a manipulative woman out for her own means and will use anyone for her own means.

As for the film's visuals I thought were excellent and some of the shots throughout were standout because of the good uses of lighting and the cinematography that gave off the style of the film. Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought managed to capture the times of the war during the times of the film. I thought the soundtrack of the film was good and it capture all the emotions felt throughout the film by the characters.

Overall, I thought this was an ok film with some good cinematography as well as a tone that was consistent through the whole film however one of the major problems was the length as someone of the superfluousness things could have been cut down as well as the characters who were mostly unlikable and you didn't care for but the acting helped make them.

I give Gone With The Wind a score of 6/10

Dial M For Murder

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial_M_for_Murder#/media/File:Dial_M_For_Murder.jpg

For the fifteenth film of the month we have Dial M For Murder

First off, we have the story which has An ex-tennis pro who carries out a plot to have his wife murdered when he discovers she is having an affair, and assumes she will soon leave him for the other man. When things go wrong, he then improvises a new plan—to frame her for murder instead. I thought the story was very intriguing and as the plot thickened it got more entertaining.

Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were one of the best parts about the film especially Tony because of his plot and what he will go to in order to get his wife out of the picture. The acting throughout was excellent and the chemistry between the main cast was built up well.

As for the film's visuals I thought the film's cinematography was one of the best parts about it with it's camera positioning for certain scenes that added to the film but also because of the lighting throughout which was used wisely.  Moving onto the tone of the film which I thought was done very well and the mystery that was built up was very intriguing and the twists throughout kept it engaging. I thought the soundtrack of the film was very good as usual for a Hitchcock film as it added to the overall experience of the film and built up the suspense.

Overall, I thought this film was great mystery plot and another great film by Alfred Hitchcock who continues to show how good his films are and how mystery can be portrayed in film to keep people interested.

I give Dial M For Murder a score of 8/10
