For the nineteenth film of the month we have 12 Years A Slave
First off, we have the story which focuses on Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free African-American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. by two con-men in 1841 and sold into slavery. I thought the story
was very powerful as well as emotional of one man's life in slavery.
Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought the acting was top notch and everyone gave a convincing performance to add to the overall experience with the main standout being the focus of the film: Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon.
As for the film's visuals I thought the film had a masterful look do it in terms of composition as well as lighting especially during the night time scenes. There were even times when some shots were drawn out and held on them to add to the horrors that the slaves felt. Moving onto the tone of the film which I managed to capture the harsh and unforgiving times that the films takes place in and wasn't afraid to show off the treatment to the slaves throughout the film. I thought the soundtrack of the film was very good with them adding to discomforting feel and situation of the film's story.
Overall, I thought this film was hard one to sit through as it was a true story being told of how he got put in slavery until his eventual freedom but not before going through an awful period of his life and because of how truthful it was this will be the one and only time I view this film.
I give 12 Years A Slave a score of 9/10
