For the seventeenth film of the month we have Ran
First off, we have the story which has an elderly warlord retires, handing over his empire to his three sons. However, he vastly underestimates how the new-found power will corrupt them and cause them to turn on each other...and him. I thought the story
was very entertaining and the slow build up of the story built up each conflict and by the end everything was left in chaos and tragedy.
Next, we have the characters which overall, I thought were mostly well acted as well as being compelling and interesting to see because of the relationships and how everyone interacted.
As for the film's visuals I thought the cinematography was masterfully put together with some great camera movement and positioning creating some striking images as well as the use of colour to give the film a vibrant and distinct look. Now we have the action which I thought was thrilling and entertaining to watch the battles unfold. Moving onto the tone of the film which did a good job at building up the tension through the story until everything came to head. I thought the soundtrack of the film was great and it amplified some of the action scenes as well as being chilling and haunting in moments.
Overall, I thought this film was entertaining from start to finish and lived up the expectations I had I heard about this Kurosawa epic and they way the story was put together and the characters were interesting as well as Kurosawa's direction make this a must see film.
I give Ran a score of 10/10
