City Of God

We now have City Of God

First off, we have the story which focuses on two boys as they live in the favelas of Rio De Janeiro but soon take different paths as the grow up. I thought the story was dark but still very interesting and the way the story was told in a non-linear fashion kept the film entertaining.

Next, we have the main characters which overall, I thought were one of the best parts as the years progress they change and become very different to who they once were as they become a part of gangs and violence becomes a big aspect of their lives. The acting was decent and kept the film interesting with their actions.

As for the visuals I thought the film had a very different style of cinematography than other films I have seen recently because the film is set during different time periods the cinematography changes to reflect that. For example at the start of the film the lighting is bright with hints of gold but as time progresses the lighting becomes darker reflecting the road the characters go down. The camera is also an interesting aspect as the camera captures many angles at the start with the relaxed atmosphere. As the favela grows the camera can move less so it becomes more claustrophobic and low angles are used. With the editing it is very fast paced which in a way reflects the chaotic nature of the setting. Now we have the action throughout the film which was very violent and disturbing in a lot of parts because the groups that were going around the favelas and the types of people who went around selling drugs. Moving onto the tone of the film which managed to capture the lifestyle that people would have went through while living in Rio De Janeiro and the types of people that would have been going around being gangs. I thought the soundtrack of the film was interesting as it used a lot of music that was fitting for the country of Brazil and I found it different than usual soundtracks. the rest of the music was catchy bar tracks that was also different.

Overall, I thought this film was an dark but enjoyable one with a story and characters that matched each other and I would definitely look at watching this one again in the future.

I give City Of God a score of 7/10
